Botanists are racing to create an industrial hemp seed variety (low in THC, but high in CBD) that thrives in the year-round 12 hours of daylight present in equatorial countries.
The plants will also need to be able to deal with humid conditions, and all of the problems that can go along with that. As more countries around the world re-legalise hemp cultivation, this research will be essential for countries that would like to enter the global CBD and hemp markets.
“Breeding plants for the tropics is unique. It will also offer a tremendous benefit to countries that legalize cannabis cultivation in similar latitudes as Colombia, since they won’t have to start from scratch,” – Ryan Douglas (Master Grower at Canopy Growth Corp)
