Hemp protein powder is an excellent source of vegan protein, but how is it made? The great thing about hemp protein powder is that it is completely RAW and natural. It’s about as unprocessed as protein powders get. Hemp protein powder is simply raw hemp seed meal milled in to a fine powder.
Today we’ll be looking at Hempiness Hemp Protein Powder (500g) as our example.
The seed variety is carefully selected for it’s high nutritional profile. Hempiness spend a lot of time researching and comparing seed varieties to ensure that their premium product is the absolute best quality. Hempiness are keeping their cards close to their chest about the actual name of seed variety, but just comparing the nutritional values to some of the cheaper seeds will quickly show why this is considered such a good choice. The 54% protein content speaks for itself.
The hemp is grown under organic farming conditions in Europe, and is certified organic by “Organic Farmers and Growers” (OF&G) certifying body. After approximately 90-120 days of growth, depending on seed variety and conditions, the plants will reach their optimum harvesting state. The plants are harvested after approximately 75% – 80% of the seeds are ripe. The seeds are then separated from the stalk and leaves through a mechanical process, and left to dry.
Once dried sufficiently, the raw hemp seeds are cold-pressed to extract the hemp seed oil and what’s left is called “meal”. On a side note, hemp seed oil is also a fantastic source of nutrition! It’s rich in Vitamin E and Omega 3, 6 and 9, in a form more easily digested by the body than any other plant oils. Hemp seed oil is great for joint health, and combating symptoms of eczema and arthritis due to it’s high levels of GLA (gamma-linolenic acid). The hemp plant is really is the gift that keeps on giving, every part of the plant is useful.
Once the oil is extracted, the remaining hemp seed meal contains high amounts of protein, fibre and amino acids as well as a long list of vitamins and minerals. The hemp seed meal is then ground down to a fine powder. The powder is shipped to the UK in bulk and is then packaged in smaller plastic-free biodegradable eco kraft paper pouches (this is for the 500g version, packaging details vary across sizes), ready to be shipped out and enjoyed by all!
So there you go. It’s quite straightforward really. No additives or complex processing required. Hemp protein powder is simply one of the best sources of plant-based protein out there. For those who like their food raw and unprocessed (vegans and vegetarians, we’re looking at you) it’s undoubtedly the best option for getting extra protein, fibre, and other nutrients in to your diet.
